Gears and shafts are both rotating elements which help in
transmitting power from one part to another part. Gears can be shifted either
manually or automatically depending on the vehicle. The material used for
manufacturing gears are cast iron, nonferrous alloys, powder – metallurgy and
plastics. On shafts generally, pulleys and gears are mounted. The materials used
for manufacturing of shafts are mild steel, alloy steels such as nickel, nickel
– chromium or chromium – vanadium steel.
Types of Gears and Shafts:
The various
types of Gears and Shafts are:
Gears
· Helical Gear
· Spiral Gear
· Herringbone Gear
· Internal and External Gear
· Bevel Gear
· Face Gear
· Worm Gear
· Rack and Pinion
· Sprockets
Shafts
· Transmission Shafts
· Machine Shafts
These Gears and Shafts are of various shapes and sizes depending
upon the business requirements. Also, they are subjected to various stresses in
which they are designed. As they are key to any industry they need to be
designed very carefully.
