The automatic gearbox contains a set of gears termed as an epicyclic gear train. The output shaft from the engine is connected to the torque converter which acts as a driver between the transmission and the engine. The whole system of variation of speed occurs in the epicyclic gear train. If the output is taken from the ring gear and the sun gear gets locked, an increase in speed is achieved. Or if the system is reversed, the results are also reversed and shows a decrease in speed. In order to achieve direct drive, the sun and ring gears and shafts are locked and the whole unit works as one.
