The powertrain
is the mechanism used to convert fuel energy into kinetic one with the use of
mechanical parts. In Automobile, powertrain defines the main components that
generate mechanical power by the use of the engine and then convert it into
kinetic energy.
The powertrain components include engine, clutch, gearbox, Transmission shaft,
differential, axle, and wheels. Recently, the components of the hybrid
power trains like a battery, electric motor are also added in this category.
The drive line of
the motor vehicles includes all the parts of the powertrain expect engine. The
major components of the powertrain components in an automobile are explained
below:
• Internal Combustion Engine: The engine produces mechanical energy through the internal energy
of the fuel by combustion. The engine provides maximum half of its peak output
value.
• Clutch: The clutch is an important
part of the vehicle as it helps in engaging and disengaging of the engine shaft
and the gearbox.
• Gearbox: Gearbox is used to produce
variation in gear ratio. The gearbox helps in reducing rpm generated by the
engine which in turn help in increasing the torque.
• Transmission shafts: It helps
in transferring power from gearbox to the differential located at some angle.
• Differential: It helps the vehicle
in taking the turn through the average power transmission to both inner and
outer wheels.
Summary: Thus the powertrain components help in reducing RPM
generated by the engine and transfer it to the wheels in an efficient and
smooth way. It includes battery and electric motor also, located in the hybrid
engine.
