Difference between the Transmission Fluid and the Gear Oil

If we generally talk about the importance of Transmissions, Gears and Shafts in any car, it would be right to say that transmission is the most important part either it is manual or the automatic one. Below is the difference between these two, Transmission fluid and the gear oil.

Transmission fluid helps in running the car very smoothly as it has a complex fluid which consists of detergents and lubricants. It also have additives which help in blocking the corrosion and rust, and also includes anti-wear additives, surfactants and dispersants which will help in cleaning and protecting the parts of the transmission which are made of metal. In short, it could be said that the transmission fluid is a very thin fluid. The colour of the transmission fluid is green or red.

Now coming towards the gear oil, the work of gear oil in the manual transmission is to prevent and lubricate the corrosion. This is all because of the reason that when the clutch is pressed and released and the gear is changed in the car, it experiences a high friction. Due to the additives, the gear oil has a very strong and distinctive smell. When the gear oil is compared to the transmission fluid, gear oil is much thicker and it is all because it is used in lubricating the gearbox and transfering the cases.

Summary: Now, it could be said that, if the gear oil and transmission  gears and shafts fluid is not used correctly in the automatic and manual transmissions, it can cause a huge damage and may increase the severe wear and tear.
