The powertrain
is the mechanism that transmits the power from the engine to the axle of the
vehicle. Powertrain plays an important role in improving the efficiency and
reduce the emission of the vehicle.
The components
included in the powertrain components are the engine, clutch, gearbox, Transmission shaft
and differential. Along with this the electric motor, battery etc. are included
in hybrid vehicles. All these components are explained below:
·
Engine:
Engine is the heart of the vehicle as it supplies the energy to the whole vehicle. The engine converts the chemical energy of
the fuel into mechanical energy. The main types of engine used in the vehicle
are petrol engine, diesel engine, and hybrid engine.
·
Clutch: It helps
in engaging and disengaging of the engine shaft and the
gearbox. In order to change gear ratio by changing gear, the clutch disengages
the engine shaft from the gearbox to stop power supply from the engine.
·
Gearbox:
Gearbox is used to change the gear ratio. It helps in reducing the rpm generated by the engine to provide power to the wheels with
increased torque and decreased speed.
·
Transmission
Shaft: Transmission shaft contains universal joints as it is used to transfer
power from gearbox to differential.
·
Differential:
It helps in providing average torque to both wheels
while taking a turn.
Summary: The powertrain components help in providing the
kinetic energy to the vehicle by the use of the whole mechanism. It helps in
providing effective power to the wheels in an economic way.
