Understand the Transmission Gears and Shafts Better

Transmission is the most important part of any vehicle. It is the transmission or the gearbox that provides the wheels with energy that is derived from the engine where the power is generated.
Owing to this more often than not, Transmission gears and shafts are held responsible for the movement of your vehicle. No matter how advanced and well maintained your car engine is if the transmission system isn’t in good condition the car wouldn’t move at all. In essence, it would be safe to say that without a proper transmission system moving the vehicle would be impossible.
Parts of transmission
There are certain types of transmission gears and shafts along with other components in the transmission system and each one of them is equally important and holds huge value in moving of the vehicle.
1.     Gears
The drive gear located on the output shaft determines in which gear your car is at the moment. The largest gear is the first gear and the smallest one is the fifth gear. The largest one has the least spin, however; it brings the most usable torque to the output shaft.

The idle gear is situated in between reverse gear on the output shaft. This gear allows the vehicle to go in the reverse direction. The gear shifter as the name suggests shifts the gear when you move it.
2.     Shafts
The input shaft is the connector between the engine where the power is generated and the gearbox where the energy is carried to from the engine. The layshaft or the countershaft is what connects the input shaft with the output shaft. It also consists of drive gears such as one used for reverse gear. The output shaft is the medium from which the power is transmitted to the rest of the drivetrain.

Shift rod, shift fork, clutch, collars, torque converter, oil pump, hydraulic system, valve body, and many others when combined with transmission gears and shafts form a gearbox.
