Torque Converter and Performance

 

An automatic transmission system requires a torque converter to function properly. The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling between the engine and transmission, allowing the engine to run even when the vehicle is stopped. Its primary role is to transfer the engine's torque to the transmission, which in turn drives the wheels to create motion. The torque converter has three main parts: the impeller, turbine, and stator.

The impeller is connected to the engine's crankshaft and spins with the engine's power. This movement generates a flow of transmission fluid, which drives the turbine. The turbine is connected to the transmission's input shaft and provides the necessary torque to drive the wheels. The stator, on the other hand, redirects the fluid flow from the turbine back to the impeller, creating a continuous loop of fluid movement.

When the vehicle is stationary, the torque converter allows the engine to continue running while the vehicle is in gear. This prevents the engine from stalling and allows for smoother engagement of the transmission when starting from a stopped position. Additionally, the torque converter provides additional torque multiplication when accelerating from a low speed, ensuring that the vehicle has the necessary power to move forward.

The torque converter also acts as a shock absorber, smoothing out the power fluctuations from the engine and reducing transmission wear. This is especially important in high-performance vehicles that generate a lot of torque, as it prevents damage to the transmission and ensures that the vehicle operates smoothly.

In summary, the torque converter is a vital component of an automatic transmission system. Its role in providing a fluid coupling between the engine and transmission allows the vehicle to remain in gear when stopped, provides additional torque multiplication and shock absorption, and ensures that the transmission operates smoothly and efficiently.
