All you need to know about gears and shafts

Mechanical gears are rotating machines with cogs or cut teeth. They mesh with some other toothed part for transmitting torque. Devices that are geared can alter the torque, speed and also direction of the power source. Gears and shafts are inseparable parts of certain vehicles. Gears and shafts are of two types- external gear and internal gear. In an external gear, the teeth are present on the cone or cylinder’s outer side. In an internal gear, the teeth are present on the cone or cylinder’s inner side. Internal gears cannot cause direction reversal of the output shaft. Some of the common types are spur, skew gears, helical, bevel, hypoid, non-circular, crown, sun and planet etc.

Check online for best quality gears and shafts. A shaft is one such mechanical component that is used to transmit torque. For delivering power, a longitudinal shaft can be used by an automobile. Drive shafts that are short are used mainly for sending power from transmission, differential and transaxle to wheels. Most vehicles come with a gearbox and a clutch. A drive shaft that connects a rear differential to the gearbox is known as a prop-shaft or a propeller shaft. Drive shafts come in one-piece, two-piece and slip-in-tube drive.
